Summary: The Québec Centre for Biodiversity Science (QCBS) and Biodiversité Québec are looking for a research professional to play a key role in promoting the sharing of data and knowledge on biodiversity. The incumbent will be responsible for facilitating interactions with researchers, documenting and adapting the data-sharing platforms maintained by Biodiversité Québec and the QCBS, and providing training on data sharing, modeling, and the use of open data resources. He or she will be part of a technical team that includes data scientists, web developers, and eco-informaticians.
Biodiversité Québec is a scientific partnership whose mission is to organize observational data, improve biodiversity monitoring in Québec and make summaries and analyses accessible to the public. The pooling of the data collected makes it possible to make new scientific advances to anticipate the effects of climate and human activities on ecosystems.
Hiring Unit : Department of Biology (Professor Andrew Gonzalez)
One-year contract potentially renewable – Position based in McGill's Department of Biology with co-supervision from the Université de Sherbrooke and travel to other universities in Quebec.
Primary Responsibilities :
Interactions with researchers : Build proactive relationships to promote a culture of data sharing. Facilitate exchanges and understand the specific needs of researchers in terms of data sharing. Encourage open collaboration to maximize the impact of biodiversity data.
Adaptation and documentation of platforms : Collaborate with technical teams to adapt platforms and document them thoroughly for optimal use and ensure compliance with standards.
Help with the publication of 'Data Papers' : Provide active support to researchers in the writing, preparation, and publication of data papers. Guide researchers in the transparent presentation of biodiversity-related data and promote visibility within the scientific community. Create a research data hosting system and integrate with biodiversity systems.
Training: Design and deliver training sessions (workshops, webinars) on data sharing, modeling, and open data resources tailored to the needs of our members QCBS. Develop training materials (tutorials, guides) to support researchers in effectively using biodiversity data platforms and tools. Evaluate training needs and provide ongoing support to ensure the correct application of best practices in data management and sharing.
Support for the QCBS : Develop research projects in biodiversity monitoring with QCBS members. Form and encourage scientific collaborations, participate in the preparation of meetings, applications for funds, the annual report, and media promotion of the QCBS.
Other Qualifying Skills and/or Abilities : Excellent communication and collaboration skills. Attention to detail and commitment to data accuracy. Knowledge of biodiversity conservation and sustainability practices is an asset. Ability to work independently and meet deadlines. Excellent verbal and written communication skills in English and French.
Education/Experience :
Demonstrated experience in data sharing, biodiversity data management, or similar field.
Excellent communication skills to facilitate interactions with researchers and provide effective training.
Knowledge of R and geographic information systems such as QGIS.
Basic knowledge of SQL and data management tools.
Interest in biodiversity and the impact of data science on conservation.
Applicants must have a Ph.D. in the field of biology, computational ecology, geography, earth and planetary sciences, or equivalent.
Location : "This position is located in Montreal, Quebec, with regular travel to the University of Sherbrooke. Work for this position must be performed in Quebec.
